Why kindness is the gift that gives back

Recent studies have shown a possible connection between doing good deeds and enjoying good health.

Performing an act of kindness has been shown to create a sense of euphoria — a so-called "helper's high" — followed by a period of calm and emotional well-being. As well as reducing stress and increasing one’s sense of well-being, this may lead to lower blood pressure and lower heart rates. Not to
mention the good that a kind deed does
for the recipient.

Here are some free or no-cost ways that you and your family can feel good by doing good.

  • Instead of tossing back a sarcastic remark or catching a bad mood from the cranky bus driver or surly waiter, summon your biggest (and sincerest) smile and wish him or her a nice day.
  • Volunteer to walk a dog at your local animal shelter.
  • Hold the door for the person behind you.
  • Make breakfast in bed for your loved one.
  • Tell the new bank teller or shop clerk what a great job they’re doing.
  • If you usually send birthday money to young relatives, try this: Add a five dollar bill, asking them to use it to do a good deed before they cash their cheque or redeem their gift card. Not only will the extra $5 do a good turn, it will make the recipient feel good.
  • Organize a sing-along evening at an old folks’ home. Or put your baking talents to work and deliver home-made cookies or cakes.
  • Fill your pocket with toonies, and give one to every person who asks you for change that day.
  • Give up your seat on the bus to someone who looks tired or stressed.
  • Whenever you see toiletries on sale, purchase a few extra. Every few months, arrange sets in small boxes or pretty cosmetics bags, and deliver to a shelter for women or homeless people.
  • Put a vase of freshly cut flowers on your desk where they’ll bring a smile to everyone who stops by.
  • Call your local children’s hospital and ask if they’d like someone to come and read stories to the kids.
  • Spend a morning cleaning garbage from a local park or beach.
  • Next time you’re out shoveling snow, clear the sidewalks of the neighbours on either side.
  • Volunteer to babysit one afternoon for a friend who’s a new mom, just so she can have some quiet time to herself.
