How a "time-out" can help
According to a recent study, regular naps may help improve heart health because they provide a “time-out” — a sort of mini-break from the stressful work environment. Even if it’s not possible for you to take a short nap at work, there are many other ways that you can relieve stress by adapting this “time-out” strategy:
- Visit your happy place. Keep photos of a wonderful vacation on your desk for a short trip back in time.
- Change your tempo. Listen to your favourite music on an MP3 player on your way to or from work.
- Enjoy some quiet time. Visit the library or a bookstore during lunch.
- Break for coffee. Zipping out to a coffee shop, or even heading to your company’s cafeteria, can offer a change of pace.
- Walk it off. Try a short walk around the block or dash up the stairs in your building to let off steam.
- Get it done. Run a quick errand for a change of scenery and get the added payoff of a sense of accomplishment.
- Dial “L”. Call a friend or loved one for a quick pick-me-up.
- Clean up. Take 10 minutes to tidy up your desk and get organized for the next day’s challenges.
- Solve a puzzle. Try working on a word or number puzzle during your break instead of fuming or worrying about work.
