Choose whole grain products more often

Starchy foods, in particular the whole grain varieties are a good source of energy and the main source of a range of nutrients in our diet. Nutrients provided by grain products include carbohydrate, B vitamins (eg. thiamine, riboflavin, niacin and folate), iron, zinc, magnesium and other components such as fibre.

Research suggests that people with a healthy heart tend to eat more whole grain foods as part of a healthy lifestyle. Good choices of whole grains are:

  • Whole grain and seeded bread
  • Whole grain pasta
  • Brown rice
  • Oats - such as oatmeal
  • Whole grain breakfast cereals
  • Whole grain crackers
